Curriculum

Gilnahirk Primary School's main aim is to offer children a broad and balanced curriculum which will develop the whole child. All schools are required to "promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, intellectual and physical development of pupils". The Northern Ireland Common Curriculum comprises programmes of study and educational themes and these provide the main content of our curriculum.

The five areas of study are ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, THE ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY AND CREATIVE AND EXPRESSIVE STUDIES.

The four educational themes are CULTURAL HERITAGE, EDUCATION FOR MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY and HEALTH EDUCATION.

Within the areas of study are the following contributory subjects ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN, HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, ART AND DESIGN, MUSIC, AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION. The educational themes are cross-curricular, delivered mainly through the above subjects. We also seek to develop in our pupils certain qualities and attitudes which are important to the personal development of pupils and their preparation for adult life. These include self discipline, confidence, independence, self-esteem and consideration of others. Similarly, through the different subjects will be promoted such general skills as communication skills, numerical skills, problem-solving skills and study skills.
